My name is Valérie, and some of you may know me from social media, where I share my everyday life, my joys, my struggles, and the journey I have been through.

In December 2023, my life changed completely. I suffered from a very severe infection that left me in critical condition, and as a result, I lost all four of my limbs.

Since then, I have been learning new things every day and finding ways to become as independent as possible.

In 2024, my parents organized a fundraiser, which, together with a contribution from the state, made it possible to purchase a larger car. Getting this car was necessary because we are a family of six, and at that time I was also using a powered wheelchair, which required enough space. The car was therefore mainly used for the needs of the whole family and for transporting me.

However, I am now in a different stage of my life. I am finishing my driving lessons and would like to have the opportunity to travel independently to school, medical appointments, and for everyday activities.

Unfortunately, I cannot drive the car we currently have for several reasons. It is too large for me, it is older, and it would be difficult for me to operate.

And that is exactly why I would like to ask you for help with something that would mean a huge step forward for me – getting and adapting a car.

Why do I need a car?

For me, a car is not just a way to get from one place to another. It is an opportunity to become more independent and less dependent on others.

I need a car that is easy for me to get in and out of. Ideally, it would have a higher seating position so that I do not have to bend down as much when getting in. I also need a large enough trunk in case I need to take my wheelchair with me.

The car will also not be possible to use in its standard condition. It will need to be individually adapted to my needs so that I can drive it safely on my own.

The modifications will include hand controls instead of traditional pedals and a special aid on the steering wheel that will allow me to control it. This also means that the car will need to have an automatic transmission rather than a manual one.

These modifications are essential for me, but they also represent a significant additional financial cost.

What would having my own adapted car mean to me?

It would mean freedom and independence for me, without having to rely on others. It would also mean being able to plan my day according to my own needs and, most importantly, having the feeling that I can decide for myself where and when I want to go.

After everything I have been through, independence is something that truly matters to me. I do not expect everything to be possible without help. I simply want to have the opportunity to do as many things as possible on my own.
