Abortion access after gender recognition

From summer 2025, legal gender recognition in Czechia no longer requires forced sterilization which is a massive victory for human rights.

However, our abortion laws haven’t caught up yet. Written in 1986, the current legislation grants access to abortion only to "women."

Even though the trans community as a whole faces diverse forms of injustice, we are focusing our resources on trans men and trans masculine people*, whose newly won legal status has created an immediate and specific paradox in abortion access.

The new status quo leaves trans men and trans masculine people in a dangerous legal limbo as they still might seek abortion care after changing the gender marker in all their documents to “male”. They face a healthcare system governed by outdated language and inconsistent hospital policies. When the law doesn't include you, the hospital door often stays closed. We already know that trans men are being rejected by Czech hospitals when asking for abortion services. This issue, previously concerning a part of the intersex community, has now been extended to a larger group of people. Thus, we need to gather robust data and spread awareness of the issue in order to start systemic change.

Our Mission: Mapping the gaps

A.S.A.P. (Abortion Support Alliance Prague) is launching a new research project mapping abortion access for trans men after legal gender recognition. We aren't just speculating; we are documenting the reality on the ground.

• Audit 80+ state hospitals: Conducting civic mapping to see how state facilities handle abortion requests from trans men and trans masculine people.
• Amplify Stories: Gathering qualitative, anonymous data from trans men to highlight the lived reality of navigating Czech healthcare.
• Publish & Advocate: Creating a bilingual (CZ/EN), illustrated report to be widely distributed online.
